Almost

"Pap-pa?"

"No, baby. We can't call grandma right now."

She lifts the receiver from its cradle and listens, laughing at the solid tone she hears.

"Pap-pa?" she asks.

"No, baby. That's not grandma."

"If you'd like to make a call, please hang up and try again..."

"Pap-pa!!" she announces triumphantly.

"No, baby, "that's definitely not grandma."

"beepeebeepeebeepeebeepeebeepee"

"Oh, sweetie, that's too loud. Let me turn it off."

Eep. Op. Ork.

"Pap-pa?!?" she inquires, confused by the intermittent beeping that's replaced the frustratingly loud, angry tone of the unconnected call.

"No, baby. That's not grandma. Can you turn it off?"

eep. op. ork.

"Almost, baby. You turned it down. We need to turn it off."

eep. op. ork.

"Almost, kid. More. Can you turn it off? Let me have it. I'll turn it off."

She shies away from my outstretched hand, protecting the receiver from me. She is certain there is someone worth talking to on the other end of the line.

"Al-most?"

Adorable! Peanut loves the phone too. She even knows to "push the red button" to shut it off. I know where this leads... ;)

i love that she calls GRandma "pap-pa"...it's both adorable and confusing ;)

How I remember the phone wars with my own little happy hands.

'Cept Bug never talked into the phone or understood the concept. But he loved drooling on it so much that eventually the buttons would stop working or the speaker would fuzz out.

We went through a lot of phones.

I'm a push over. I'd gladly let him play with the phone with his happy hands as long as he left the remote control alone.

I do have priorities you know.

This is sooo cute. My little man wants absolutely nothing to do with the phone. It's almost like pulling teeth to get him to talk to Grandma. He won't even hold it right. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I guess I'll find out when he is 14.

Hmmm. Last night I had three missed calls.

P-A-P-A

Shawn, you know I couldn't resist!

Love it! So sweet! (FYI, it only goes downhill from here, the whole phone monopolization girl thing)

Very cute!

Nate adores spending hours on the phone calling everyone in our family.

Jake too, although he holds the phone over the back of his head, babbling happily away, somewhere around his shoulder blade. It's what all the cool kids are doin' don't'chya know?

Sweet. Once she gets that phone thing figured out, watch out! :-)

She'll be asking for her own phone in about 2 months. You've been warned.

I AM dying of cuteness. I AM.

Mr. Lady: I win.

Heather: Are there any phone schools?

ChurchPunkMom: she always wants to be on the phone if I'm talking. And if I hang up she'll say "bye bye" and then I die.

Swirl Girl: Actually, "eep op ork" means "I love you", so "eep op ork ah ah" would mean "I love you ah ah." My wife and I have had THAT conversation many, many times :}

Michelle: she's figuring out the speed dial

Ali: yeah, she started doing that over Thanksgiving and we can't get her to stop. She used to just call her " 'ma ".

Redneck Mommy: she knows she can't get the remote to do what she wants it to, so she'll hand it to me and ask me to do something about whatever is on.

kaila: I vote "good thing".

PapaTV: thought I recognized that number.

Lisa@Crazy Adventures In Parenting: yeah. I remember.

Mandy: I've never had much success with that method. I keep yelling "hello" and nobody answers.

Maura: she's already got friends. It's all happening too quickly.

Threeundertwo: She HAS two phones. Flip phones! They don't work, of course, but she has them available to her at all times. She's just smart enough to realize that it's our phone that is the cool one.

the new girl: heh. That's because YOU KNOW.

And I just fell over and died from that cuteness.

We put pictures of people on the speed dial buttons so Smooch could call at will.It worked pretty well until I answered the door one day to find my Dad standing there. Smooch had called and told him to come get her.....so he did. I was otherwise occupied I guess...had to move the phone out of reach for awhile.

OK, that was pretty fucking cute.

My kid thinks everything is a telephone. He had an entire conversation the other day with someone on the other line via banana.

Elisa said...

ah, yes, women's fascination with the phone. It starts early :-)

CaraBee said...

What is it with kids and phones? At least she's not calling the police. That was me, two weeks ago answering the door to the po-po at 7am. Good times.

Backpacking Dad said...

Miss Grace: I'll send the EMTs

Cindy and Co: That is awesome. I can't wait for that to happen. Because Grandpa lives across the continent :}

SciFi Dad: Ha! Another one down :}

Petra a.k.a. The Wise (*young*) Mommy: Erin does that too. She's obsessed with "ick" over the earbuds.

disneyland_grandma: watch out :}

bejewell: "No. No, I can't hear you. No, I can't hear you. Sorry. I have a banana in my ear."

Elisa: yeah it does.

CaraBee: Is there way to disable 9-1-1 calling? :}
