The Mundane Details

I was asked by AnnaC if I could point her to a post I've done about running errands, or going shopping, or other things that I might do as an at home dad, and that I might experience differently than an at home mom.

I've tried writing a straight post about that kind of stuff, and I just can't do it. If you are genuinely curious about how dads approach the day-to-day stuff I recommend checking out At Home Dad, a forum for guys like me who like to make friends with other at home dads and who also look to give and receive advice on parenting, support for gripes, and encouragement to those who are new to at home dadness.

If you do visit, keep in mind that this is a male environment: that's a warning, not a restriction. You can contribute on the site if you are not a dad, or not male; but you will be reading posts by dads talking to other dads in a kind of "safe zone", where we appreciate the freedom we have on that site to talk about problems with, we presume, an audience who will be sympathetic from the start. It's actually pretty tame, but the perspective is dad-sided. So, explore at your leisure; use your discretion. And try not to hold anything a dad says to another dad against him. A lot of it might just be guy-crap.

So, that's my plug. If you are curious about SAHD perspectives on things it's a great place to go look. And the posts are generally honest.

But please, pay no attention to the constant comments on how pretty I am or how I'm always making out with moms.  That, uh, thing with Awkward Moment Mom only happened once.

I am pretty, though. And my mommy says I'm cool, and the most handsomest boy in school.

I'm not a SAHD, but if it's a safe haven for dads (and boy, do we need one), I'll be checking it out. Thanks for a shove in the right direction.

OMGosh! I just read the awkward post for the first time and I'm soooo sorry, but I laughed my fool head off! I wasn't really laughing *AT* you per say...more just a relief to know I'm not the only dork out there.

um...not that you're a dork or anything, but I've SOOOO had that same sort of awkward moment..worse maybe if you count copping an accidental feel of my flight instuctor at 5000 feet...yeah...I kinda just wanted the sky to open up and swallow me whole..

I'm not sure what this says about my character honestly, but I think I might fit in a bit better with you Stay at home Dads.

Do you sometimes stay in your pajamas until 2 p.m., and then run around the place and pick up, so it looks like you've done some stuff and not just sat around in your pajamas until 2 p.m.?

If so, welcome to my world as a SAHM.

Ok, not EVERY day. But definitely Wednesdays.

You feel pretty?

Oh so pretty?

Do you feel pretty, and witty, and bright?

I spit my coffee all over my laptop when I read the awkward moment post. I may need a new laptop now, but damn it's nice to know that other people have moments like those.

Holy crap that awkward post was hilarious! I think we have all been in one of those moments! I was sitting here at work, half-asleep and already ready to leave. Thanks for the morning laugh!

I just read your awkward moment and laughed sooo hard. You laugh the hardest at something when you can imagine yourself doing something exacty like that.

Thanks for the link!! Also for the link to your awkward moment post... my favorite part is how we can have fourteen million thoughts running through our heads in a 2 second span -- beautifully captured in all its awkward glory!
Happy Friday!

swanny: any time.

stacie: no. I am a dork. I embrace my dorkiness.

aunt becky: beer's on you, then.

FADKOG: no, that never happens. instead I stay in my pajamas all day and then a couple of hours before my wife gets home I remain in my pajamas not doing anything and then when she gets home the house is still exactly the same way it looked when she left. And Erin's diaper needs changing. Those are Wednesdays around here :}

badass geek: It's "pretty, and witty, and gaaaaaay, and I pity all the girls who can't be me today." And yes I do.

babyd2008: send me the bill :}

becs: you're welcome. Although Awkward Moment Mom is going to kill me for bringing it up again :} She does read this.

merecat: ah, so it was you I saw in the park with that guy doing that thing...

annac: you're welcome. and it is indeed a happy friday.

Not to be a stickler, but the song does have lyrics that read: "I feel pretty, and witty, and bright! And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight."

I was in the orchestra for a series of performances of West Side Story, and pretty much know the book by heart.

No need for a laptop refund, there aren't many things that make me laugh that hard! You should totally feel pretty, witty, and whatever gets you going.

I love you.

And you are the Handsomest Girl at the Harvest Moon Ball.

Plus you can come make out with me any day.

I can also guarantee that Bacon will try to make out with Erin the second he sees her. He's crazy for the pretty girls like that. He'll just kiss her full on the mouth though...no touchy feely stuff...at least until the second playdate

No Boys!!!!

That's my constant refrain to Erin when I catch her giving some teenager with tattoos and piercings "the eyes".

I'm going to need an extra shotgun.

You are quite pretty...kind of look like Kevin Aleiandro who plays Danny Reyes on Shark. I was watching the show last night and saw him and thought "wow, he kind of looks like BPD."

FDKG: I do that when I stay home from work for the day. Only, I start picking up about 7:30 before my husband comes home from work. Or, I'll shower and put on clean jammies and do nothing. But usually when I stay home from work, it's because I'm sick (like the last two days)
